Triveni Digital’s Richard Chernock to Delve Into Non-Real-Time Services at 2008 NAB Broadcast Engineering Conference
Expert in Metadata Management and Content Distribution Will Discuss Benefits of Non-Real-Time (NRT) Content Delivery for On-Demand Applications
PRINCETON, NJ - February 11, 2008
Triveni Digital, a subsidiary of LG Electronics (LGE), today announced that Dr. Richard Chernock, the company’s CTO, will present “Non-Real-Time Services” (NRT) at the 62nd NAB Broadcast Engineering Conference, which runs April 12-17, 2008, at the Las Vegas Convention Center (LVCC). Chernock will introduce the basic concepts and technical requirements of NRT services, following up with illustrative scenarios that demonstrate how this new approach to content delivery enables broadcasters to capitalize more fully on their media assets.
“In an increasingly on-demand world, broadcasters require more flexible means of putting their prime assets in front of paying customers,” said Chernock. “As the industry transitions to digital, NRT services offer broadcasters an appealing opportunity for extending their business and growing it beyond the conventional ad-based model. Standards for NRT delivery are under development now, and the involvement of working engineers will be critical to the immediate and long-term viability of these standards. NRT delivery of content is likely to be a major component of the emerging mobile/handheld technology within the ATSC. I look forward to engaging my fellow engineers in a discussion of standards currently under consideration by the ATSC and the future possibilities offered by this exciting content-delivery model.”
NRT content is delivered in advance of use and stored in the receiving device for access on-demand. Typical applications for NRT services include push VOD; news, information, and weather services; personalized TV channels; music distribution; reference information; and applications or games, whether advertiser-sponsored or sold by subscription. During his presentation, Chernock will examine the emergence of NRT services and how they allow provision of both “traditional” TV fare and customized information targeted to multiple platforms, including PCs, handheld media devices, or even commercial platforms.
As director of technology at Triveni Digital, Chernock is responsible for developing strategic directions for metadata management, content distribution, and monitoring for emerging digital television systems and infrastructures. He is active in many of the ATSC and SCTE standards committees, particularly those with a focus on metadata, monitoring, and data broadcast. Chernock chairs a number of ATSC ad hoc committees dedicated to metadata and transport issues. He is also vice chair of the Technology Group on Distribution (TSG) and chairs the Non-Real-Time Services and Mobile/Handheld management layer activities within ATSC.
Chernock’s presentation is scheduled for 10 a.m. on April 15, in LVCC room S226/227.
