Triveni Digital’s Content Distribution Solution Deployed Across Pennsylvania’s Public Television Stations
SkyScraper™ Enables Backup of Statewide EAS System and
Opens Door for Additional Datacasting Services
PRINCETON, NJ - May 16, 2007
Triveni Digital, a subsidiary of LG Electronics, today announced that the Pennsylvania Public Television Network (PPTN) is deploying the company’s SkyScraper™ digital content distribution systems statewide — at PPTN’s network operations center and eight public broadcast stations — to enable the launch of data-distribution applications for distance learning, education, training, and emergency management.
“The SkyScraper system has many potential uses on the local and state levels, and we’re looking forward to exploring those possibilities not only for education and training purposes, but also for health, public safety, and emergency management, as several of our stations have done on recent pilot projects with PPTN,” said Richard Kaelberer, director of engineering and operations at PPTN. “Our involvement with the state EAS system led us to look at datacasting as a solution for getting out critical information in a timely manner, and with a standardized system in place across PPTN stations, we’ll be positioned to provide EAS messages when necessary and establish other services that support the state’s education and workforce development initiatives.”
The SkyScraper system from Triveni Digital provides a platform for highly efficient point-to-multipoint content distribution and also allows for targeted point-to-point delivery. Through this solution, public TV stations such as those under the PPTN umbrella can use available digital TV bandwidth to generate new revenues and support their public charter. This can be achieved by providing efficient delivery of multimedia content for education, homeland security, and other public services. PPTN reaches 98 percent of the households in Pennsylvania. With SkyScraper systems, public television stations can now reach over 50 percent of U.S. households nationally via DTV bandwidth already available. This provides for a cost-effective solution to emergency broadcasting throughout the country, without the need for additional infrastructure.
WHYY in Philadelphia and WITF in Harrisburg already have installed SkyScraper systems, and WVIA (Pittston), WQED (Pittsburgh), WPSU (University Park), WYBE (Philadelphia), WQLN (Erie), and WLVT (Bethlehem) are expected to deploy their new systems over the summer. SkyScraper installations at all of these PPTN stations and the PPTN network operations center will be linked through data paths on the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania’s ATM network, so stations will have the ability to datacast their own local content as well as statewide content and messaging.
PPTN serves as a backup distribution system for the emergency alert and Amber Alert broadcast systems in Pennsylvania, so it already is equipped to originate alerts if the primary satellite-based system should fail. As all of the PPTN stations take their systems online, they will also have the capability to leverage their bandwidth and datacasting ability to deliver other types of valuable data to area residents and organizations.
