Triveni Digital’s Richard Kaye to Address Transport
Stream Monitoring at SCTE Cable-Tec Expo 2007
PRINCETON, NJ - May 14, 2007
Triveni Digital, a subsidiary of LG Electronics, today announced that Richard Kaye, the company’s senior sales engineer, will speak on the topic of transport stream monitoring at the Society of Cable Telecommunications Engineers (SCTE)'s Cable-Tec Expo® 2007 on June 22. Kaye’s presentation, “Monitoring and Quality Assurance in the Digital Head End,” will focus on the challenges of digital distribution, the fundamentals of MPEG analysis, common compliance issues, and best practices for MPEG monitoring.
“The transition to digital presents cable engineers with a new set of challenges in ensuring their signals provide all the video, audio, and data necessary for a positive viewing experience and FCC compliance,” said Kaye. “Different TV sets and set-top boxes handle incoming signals differently, so it can be difficult to identify underlying problems in the transport stream. The MPEG transport layer is one factor that defines the quality of the video received, and we’ll discuss the elements that warrant particular attention and how head end personnel can balance depth of analysis with continuous MPEG monitoring.”
The tutorial will review MPEG transport, encoding, the role of metadata, and synchronization; common MPEG errors; current standards that help cable operators to define best practices in monitoring; and possible architectures for establishing monitoring systems. The session will conclude with a demonstration of troubleshooting transport streams using an MPEG analyzer.
Kaye’s experience with MPEG monitoring includes field work troubleshooting real DTV systems and software engineering for Triveni Digital’s MPEG monitoring solution. He is also a contributor to A/78, the new ATSC Recommended Practice on Transport Stream Verification, and currently sits on several ATSC standards committees including S-6 and, more recently, PC-3.
SCTE Cable-Tec Expo is the society’s annual flagship event, and this year it will run from June 19-22 at the Orlando Orange County Convention Center in Orlando, Fla. Kaye’s presentation will be held in room 315A at 12:00 p.m. on June 22. A second session will be held in the same room at 1:30 p.m. that day.
