Triveni Digital Enhances GuideBuilder™ With
Centralized PSIP and Redundancy Capabilities
PRINCETON, NJ - April 04, 2007
Triveni Digital, a subsidiary of LG Electronics, today announced that its GuideBuilder™ product for managing program-event information and related data is now available with centralized Program and System Information Protocol (PSIP) generation and redundancy capabilities. These enhancements to the GuideBuilder system give broadcasters flexibility in system design and confidence in the continuity of PSIP data (metadata) in the digital signal, thereby ensuring compliance with FCC regulations and facilitating uninterrupted delivery of full-featured DTV transmissions to viewers.
“Metadata-generation systems have become mission critical components of today’s DTV transmission operations,” said Ralph Bachofen, director of product management and marketing, Triveni Digital. “Accurate generation of PSIP data enables such basic end-user functions as tuning to the correct channel or accessing electronic program guide (EPG) information about television shows and schedules. It also supports closed-captioning and multilingual broadcasting. The newest release of GuideBuilder provides a redundant and centralized PSIP generation feature set to ensure that the flow of metadata is maintained seamlessly, and the viewer’s experience is unchanged even in the event of internal or external failures.”
Triveni Digital’s GuideBuilder system provides key operational capabilities for both content providers and network operators by generating accurate PSIP data. PSIP data is mandated by the FCC. It forms the foundation for ATSC digital television transport streams and is important for digital cable carriage of over-the-air (OTA) broadcasts. Errors in PSIP data can cause lapses in the DTV signal, problems with closed captioning, and errors with EPGs, all significant concerns for broadcasters. GuideBuilder’s centralized PSIP generation option lowers operational and capital costs for large station groups because it creates PSIP for all stations. PSIP data for each station is communicated over a network and merged into the broadcast at the transmission site, while each station maintains the capability to modify its own schedule if necessary.
For most broadcasters, a 1+1 redundant PSIP model meets the needs of one- to three-station configurations. In this scenario, the primary GuideBuilder database server holds schedule and generator configuration information, and a redundant GuideBuilder system, linked to the same input sources, mirrors that configuration. The primary PSIP generator operates normally, generating metadata dynamically by acquiring schedule data from list services, traffic systems, automation, and the network; creating PSIP/SI/PSI tables; and then feeding those tables into multiplexers/encoders via a router. Continuous updating of the redundant server allows it to take over operations transparently if necessary. More robust redundancy configurations are available for broadcasters operating a larger number of stations from a single infrastructure.
