Harris Corporation and Triveni Digital Announce Strategic OEM Agreement to Bring Next-Generation DTV Products to Market
Cincinnati, Ohio, October 29, 2001
Harris Corporation (NYSE:HRS), the leader in end-to-end digital broadcast systems, and Triveni Digital, Inc., the leading provider of data-enhanced digital television (DTV) solutions, have signed a strategic OEM agreement that will result in next-generation PSIP (Program and System Information Protocol), PSIP re-generation, stream monitoring and analysis, and other solutions for DTV broadcasters.
PSIP data is distributed with the DTV signal and contains Electronic Program Guide, rating, timetables, and other important information that is necessary for error-free program reception/tuning and the preservation of years of investment in channel branding. Similarly, stream monitoring and analysis ensure that the audio, video, PSIP, and embedded data in the digital transmission streams conform to the transmission standards and include the intended content.
Under the agreement, Harris will incorporate proprietary versions of Triveni technology throughout its PSIPplus line of metadata management and insertion products, and within its MonitorPlus stream monitoring and analysis offerings. Triveni Digital has set the pace in the development of metadata generation systems, transport stream monitoring and analysis, PSIP re-transmission, and data broadcast solutions. Triveni Digital also will assume operation of Harris’ program listings data service, which automatically provides Electronic Program Guide information generated by Tribune Media Services (TMS) to subscriber stations.
With Triveni Digital, Harris is incorporating new capabilities and options requested by broadcasters into its PSIPplus and MonitorPlus product lines. Current Harris PSIPplus users will receive a new release of PSIPplus PRO software free of charge. The new software will combine the best of Triveni’s technology and the best of Harris’ previous PSIPplus features. PSIPplus PRO software allows data to be imported from various services and also offers full editing capabilities, providing maximum flexibility in station configuration/operation and low operational cost.
Additionally, Harris will broaden its PSIPplus line with two new versions, both upgradeable to PSIPplus PRO:
- PSIPplus TMS, which automatically downloads Electronic Program Guide information from Tribune Media Services for broadcasters who do not require editing capabilities, and
- PSIPplus Basic, an entry-level version for small- to medium-sized, budget-constrained broadcasters who nevertheless want a future-ready system that is capable of complying with current and future ATSC A/65 and A/67 PSIP recommendations.
Furthermore, Harris will include Triveni Digital’s StreamBridge PSIP re-transmission solution within its DTV solutions portfolio.
"The agreement with Triveni Digital ensures that Harris will continue to deliver the most advanced, full-featured PSIP products and services on the market," said John DeLay, director of DTV Products for Harris’ Broadcast Communications Division. "The agreement also positions Harris to respond quickly to new requirements—for example, the current ATSC proposal that would allow broadcasters to include advertising with their PSIP stream—as PSIP standards continue to evolve."
"We are very excited by Harris’ recognition of Triveni Digital’s data management technology," said Mark Simpson, president and CEO of Triveni Digital. "By working closely with Harris, this relationship will result in the creation of the best solutions for broadcasters for their transition to digital. With the strength of Harris in the broadcast arena, this agreement will further accelerate Triveni Digital’s growth in market share for our key product segments."
Harris’ PSIPplus products are designed for tight integration with Harris’ FlexiCoder MPEG-2 encoders, a scalable encoding solution that enables broadcasters to add capabilities simply by inserting additional boards into a chassis. Since its January 1998 introduction, the FlexiCoder encoder has been selected by the majority of U.S. DTV broadcasters. Harris offers a complete range of DTV systems products.
