Motorola To Offer Triveni Digital PSIP Generation System
Motorola's Satellite and Broadcast Network Systems business unit to integrate
PSIP Builder Pro with its Terrestrial Digital Broadcast System
San Diego, California, August 31 2000
Motorola today announced a non-exclusive agreement with Triveni Digital, formerly LG Electronics Research Center of America, to resell its PSIP Builder Pro AE-10 system. The agreement allows Motorola to incorporate the PSIP Builder Pro's dynamic PSIP generation with its ATSC compliant DTV broadcast systems
Program and System Information Protocol (PSIP) is a group of tables applied to terrestrial and cable broadcasts which provides digital television receivers, set-top boxes and PC-DTV receivers with program and system information. PSIP information is essential for receivers to acquire channels and tune; it is also needed for electronic program guide (EPG) and other navigational software to run on receivers.
PSIP Builder Pro AE-10 is a system product for DTV broadcasters that
Generates PSIP bit-streams compliant with the A/65 specifications from multiple input data sources which can be multiplexed with the audio and video components of an ATSC compliant broadcast stream.
Allows broadcast station operators to view and edit the PSIP data in an easy-to-use format, such that no detailed knowledge of the A/65 specification is needed.
Generates consistent data across PSIP tables.
As options, PSIP Builder Pro also offers the program listing service (based on data provided by the Tribune Media Service) so that ATSC DTV station staff does not need to enter program data manually; interface with popular traffic and automation systems; automatic merge capability to reconcile and merge PSIP information originating at different sources; remote graphical user interface for an intranet configuration allowing authorized users from different departments of a DTV station to access the PSIP system; and various fault-tolerant features to support mission-critical PSIP operations.
"PSIP Builder Pro is a comprehensive easy to use system that will provide our customers with increased flexibility in managing their channel lineups while ensuring compliance with the ATSC broadcast standards," said Marty Stein, Sr. Marketing Director with Motorola's Satellite and Broadcast Network Systems business unit. "The integration of PSIP Builder Pro with our DigiCipher ŅII Encoding System has gone very smoothly due to Triveni Digital's ability to provide a truly open system," added Stein
DigiCipher II technology is developed by Motorola's San Diego-based Satellite and Broadcast Network Systems (SBNS) business unit, which provides digital television systems sending compressed video service to cable television head-ends, television network affiliates, corporate locations, and consumer homes. Motorola, through its merger with General Instrument Corporation, is credited with the invention of digital television and, since the first commercial deployment in 1993, has shipped over 5,000 digital compression channels worldwide. The technology compresses and multiplexes both standard definition television (SDTV) and high definition television (HDTV) signals within a single integrated transmission system. It is compatible with MPEG-2 standards for transport and video syntax.
"We are really excited to be working with Motorola for seamless integration of our products and broader distribution to customers. Motorola has a very strong position in digital television technologies, so we especially value their endorsement of Triveni Digital's industry-leading PSIP solutions. The strengths of the companies are highly complementary, so we expect that with Motorola, we'll be able to offer many innovative and high quality systems in the future," said Mark Simpson, President of Triveni Digital.
