Triveni Digital announces “StreamDoctor” - a free service for ATSC digital television stations to analyze and report problems in their DTV transport streams and help them comply with the ATSC standards. The National Association of Broadcasters (NAB) encourages broadcasters to take advantage of this service.
StreamDoctor is free DTV stream analysis service.
Princeton, NJ – November 1, 2000

Triveni Digital will analyze DTV transport streams at no cost to DTV stations for compliance with ATSC standards, focusing primarily on the following problems:

• Lack of compliance with the ATSC Program and System Information Protocol (PSIP) standard
• Audio and video buffer problems (both underflow and overflow)
• Program Clock Reference (PCR) frequency and jitter problems

These problems may result in: TV viewers being unable to tune to a DTV station; audio or video break-ups, sound stuttering, lip synch problems; and unpredictable audio/video effects at the DTV receiver end, or noticeable irregularities in the audio/video signal received.

The StreamDoctor free service will be available to DTV stations from November 1 through December 31, 2000. DTV streams received by Triveni Digital prior to December 31st will be analyzed and problems will be reported to DTV stations free from any service charge.

What does a DTV station need to do to use the StreamDoctor service?

• Send a short segment (approximately 10 seconds) of your DTV transport stream (either on a CD-R or magnetic media or via FTP transfer) to Triveni Digital.
• For stations without the facilities to capture DTV transport streams, Triveni Digital may make arrangements (such as sending a representative) to capture the streams.
• Triveni Digital experts will analyze the DTV transport streams using its StreamScopeTM MT-20 product and report the findings to the DTV station directly. This information will be kept confidential and will not be disclosed to any third party without the express permission of the station.

"NAB appreciates this free service offered by Triveni Digital in support of a successful digital transition for TV stations by helping the stations to analyze critical areas of their transport streams. NAB will publicize this free service from Triveni Digital through its TV TechCheck newsletter, its PSIP e-mail reflector, a new portion of the NAB web site (primarily focused on PSIP), and NAB newsletters," said Lynn Claudy, NAB Senior Vice President for Science and Technology. Contact Art Allison of NAB at 202 429 5418 to be added to the PSIP e-mail reflector. Also watch for a new web page (primarily focused on PSIP) to be added to the NAB web site (www.nab.org) soon.

"Our mission is to serve the broadcast industry in its transition to the new digital infrastructure," said Mark Simpson, President of Triveni Digital. "There are many challenges and issues, such as embedding complex data structures in transport streams. Our experts are ready to analyze DTV stations' transport streams for compliance with ATSC standards. We hope this service will help to rapidly move the state-of-the-art forward in PSIP implementation and other areas of compliance, which should help to ensure equipment interoperability and satisfied TV viewers. By working together, we can smooth the transition to digital broadcasting."
